Frequently asked questions about dental treatments

We answer the most common questions

Pediatric dentistry

At what age should I take my child to the dentist?

The Spanish Society of Pediatric Dentistry, the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the European Academy of Pediatric Dentistry advise the visit of the infant patient at the beginning of the primary dentition (no later than six months) since it is the ideal way to carry out effective prevention of caries diseases, traumatisms and their consequences, control of growth and eruption of teeth and establish the appropriate advice on feeding and control of the use of the pacifier / bottle.

Is the use of a pacifier harmful?

It is not harmful, as long as it is withdrawn between the ages of two and three. Prolonged use after this age can cause deformation of the dental arch.

My son is five years old and his tooth is moving, is this normal?

The change from the primary to the permanent dentition usually occurs between the ages of six and eight, although in some cases it is advanced or delayed and this may be within normal limits. Likewise, it is convenient that it be reviewed by the pediatric dentist.

What should I do in the event of a trauma?

In any case of a blow to the teeth, it is essential to urgently assist the pediatric dentist. Any injury, although apparently no damage, can trigger future sequelae. The dentist will be in charge of reviewing and monitoring the case to minimize the consequences of the trauma.

What if it is a dental avulsion?

The important thing is to preserve the teeth as well as possible during the time they are out of place in the mouth. The collection and manipulation of the tooth should never be done in the root area, the washing will be done with serum or milk trying to reposition the tooth in the dental socket and go immediately to the pediatric dentist.

If this is not possible or you do not feel capable of doing it, the transfer of said tooth must be done urgently to the pediatric dentist, keeping it in a moist medium (serum, milk, and even, placed in the mouth itself under the tongue) never in dry (napkins, handkerchiefs ...). The specialist will be in charge of implementing the necessary measures to reduce the consequences of said injury. From the first hour after the tooth is out of the mouth, the prognosis worsens.

My son has broken a tooth, what do I have to do?

Avoid the consumption of extremely cold and hot drinks and hard foods and go to the dentist as soon as possible, so that he is the one who values ??the importance of the fracture.

Orthodontics

What is the appropriate age to treat malocclusions?

It varies depending on the type of problem and its severity. Therefore, it is advisable to consult the orthodontist as soon as an abnormality is discovered. It is recommended that, whether or not a problem is detected, children be taken for examination by the orthodontist at least at the age of six.

What types of appliances are used?

It varies depending on the type of problem and its severity. Therefore, it is advisable to consult the orthodontist as soon as an abnormality is discovered. It is recommended that, whether or not a problem is detected, the orthodontist takes children for examination at least at the age of six.

  • Functional appliances: These appliances, by varying the function of the facial and chewing muscles, provide a more favourable environment for the developing jaws, optimizing their growth potential. The use of functional devices requires a great deal of collaboration on the part of the patient, who must wear them for as long as they are instructed.
  • Removable appliances: They should not be thought of as an alternative to fixed treatments with bands or braces. We generally use them as a means of retention at the end of a treatment with another type of appliance, or to eliminate a habit early.
  • Fixed appliances: To achieve precise results, fixed appliances require a very meticulous technique, through the precise placement of cemented bands and braces on each and every one of the teeth, as well as a series of sophisticated arches to achieve the dental displacements according to the treatment plan developed. Braces can be metallic or aesthetic, which go more unnoticed.
  • Invisible braces: The “transparent aligners” treatment consists of a series of practically invisible and removable aligners that are changed every two weeks for a new set of aligners. Each of them is made specifically for your teeth. As you change the aligner, your teeth will move, little by little, week after week, until they are aligned and in the final position prescribed by the orthodontist.

What is Retention?

Once the fixtures are removed, the active treatment ends. But there remains another important step called Retention. Retainers are designed to try to keep the teeth in their correct position while minimizing the tendency to recur and movement they experience. The orthodontist will decide how long to wear them, as well as the most suitable type of retainer for each case.

Do appliances cause cavities?

Orthodontic appliances do not cause cavities. On the contrary, some, such as the fixed ones, protect the covered part of the tooth by means of the cement that acts as a seal. The devices, on the other hand, can make it easier for food debris to be trapped and bacterial plaque to form. Plaque and food debris accumulated on teeth and around appliances can cause swollen gums, bad breath, permanent tooth marks, and cavities.

As an adult, can I carry out orthodontic treatment?

Although the importance of early or adolescent treatment is stressed, more and more adult irregularities are being treated with success. Treatments in adult patients are usually also carried out in collaboration with the general dentist and other specialist dentists. There is no reason for an adult to give up considering the possibility of orthodontic treatment in this age of advanced techniques and with a social environment that is placing great importance on personal presence. However, orthodontic treatments have limitations that you must be aware of and that must be identified and compensated in the most effective way.

What is orthognathic surgery?

It is the surgery of the maxillary bones whose objective is the correction of skeletal malocclusions in adult patients. In cases of extreme deformity, it is necessary to combine orthodontics with surgery. The orthodontist will then recommend a maxillofacial surgeon to jointly develop the appropriate treatment plan.

How much does an orthodontic treatment cost?

The cost of treatment is influenced by many factors including the duration and complexity of the treatment or the type of devices used to solve it. The budget is prepared after conducting the study, individually for each case. We finance all treatments without interest, in monthly installments and therefore, the economic aspect of the treatment is planned in a way that is affordable to all.

What are the benefits of orthodontic treatment?

Orthodontics establishes the morphological and functional balance of the mouth and face, which improves facial and smile aesthetics, positively impacting the psychosocial aspect of the person.
